Limiting negative impacts regarding oil and gas development in Tanzania funded by WWF-Tanzania

The program aimed at raising awareness to the citizens and other stakeholders regarding oil and gas exploitation process and the emerged EACOP project, to regulate citizen’s high expectations and advocate for inclusiveness, transparency and accountability in order to prohibit unnecessary conflict and ultimately limiting negative impacts in the societies. The program also aimed at observing the potential economic benefits of the oil and gas sector in Tanzania including the EACOP project. NCEE is highly concerned about environmental conservation and protection in the areas where the pipe will pass through, as some areas are sensitive protected areas, settlement and agriculture areas. The organization saw the need to address social and cultural impacts, preparedness of local communities, regulating citizen’s expectations in the communities basically project Priority areas (PAs).

Under this WWF fund, the NCEE was able to achieve below listed outcomes;

General Outcomes

This program led to NCEE engagement in the following;

  • Participation in the inauguration of the 1,445 km East Africa Crude Oil pipeline Project (EACOP) from Hoima-Uganda to Tanga –Tanzania on 5th August, 2017 at Chongoleani Tanga.
  • NCEE in collaboration with other CSOs; MSOAPO (Mtwara), LANGO (Lindi), Tree of Hope (Tanga), LHRC (Dar es salaam), CRED and GRA from Uganda organized the press conference in Tanga acknowledged on a ground- breaking ceremony and made recommendation on human right and environmental concerns over the pipeline.
  • NCEE participated in development of policy recommendations with other coalitions (MANET, MARENGO and SEF-Tanzania) and engagement meetings with the MPs association (TAPAFE) AT Dodoma in February 2018. Also conducted a meeting in September 2018 with the Parliamentary committee for the Energy and Environment and Investment committee. The forum appreciated the recommendation since some were accommodated by the government
  • Due to the raising of awareness to communities through the EACOP project on reducing negative environmental, socio-economic and cultural values, NCEE had a chance to meet with EACOP through consultation teams that work with the community on engagement meetings.
  • NCEE conducted a radio program in Tanga (TK FM STEREO that reached the local people in a wide range at the time, which increased understanding of the EACOP project by Local communities. 
  • Also, the organization conducted 3 special TV programs (JARIDA MARIDHAWA) with Star Television and Radio Free Africa on oil and exploitation and community preparedness as well as government’s commitment. The program was broadcasted country wide.
  • NCEE developed a strong relationship with the government through engagement meetings with the Tanga regional office, Mkinga and Tanga District Commissioners, Chumbageni and Mkinga Divisions and LGAs in their respective areas, which resulted in close support from the governmen
  • Learning visit to Madimba gas processing plant, waste management company and MRENGO coalition in Lindi.
  • NCEE participation to Uganda (Kabaale-Hoima trip) for experience sharing
  • The organization attended a training in Norway on best practices and experiences on oil management to both upstream downstream  

NCEE also was a part of a training conducted in Dar es salaam by STATOIL on oil exploitation and extractive process, a knowledge shared with other members of other coalitions.

Specific outcomes

  • The magnitude of citizen’s expectations has been regulated to a large extent
  • 134 youth were recruited and trained as militia from Chongoleani and the adjacent village of Putini who will be employed for security services along the pipeline.
  • 70 youth have been recruited for the fire brigade who will assist in rescue services
  • There is minimal number of reported grievances concerning compensation
  • Improvement of food vending services (Mama Lishe)

If you answered yes to any of the two questions this is the right project for you, you will work with local teachers and experience planning lessons and thinking of activities to get students learning, since most of the children have English language as their second or third language, you will need to think of ways to encourage your students to practice speaking English as much as possible so that they can benefit from your presence there as you exploit your teaching abilities to the maximum extent

You don’t need previous experience or qualifications to join since you will be working with local teachers who can help you and answer your questions

This project exists in a year round, you can join anytime from a minimum stay of one  week

The volunteer house has running water and electricity but it’s important to note that there are often power outages which can sometimes affect the availability of hot water and power

Bedding is provided however you will need to bring your own towels and toiletries

In the volunteer house there is a cook who prepares meals and there is a security guard. The local team are also available throughout your stay at the house for support

If you would like to arrive a day earlier than your recommended arrival date or spend few extra nights after finishing your programs we can arrange extra night for accommodation for you for 30Usd per person, per night , meals included, subject to availability

If you would like to stay connected during your stay we recommend bringing an unlocked phone and purchasing a local SIM card when you arrive in Tanzania, the local team will assist you in purchasing the SIM card, you can also have access to WiFi at the volunteer house
